It recently came to my attention that a popular UFO lecturer, Richard Doty, was the guest on the “Fade To Black” show with Jimmy Church on 6/27/2023. I got quite a few emails from different individuals asking me to listen to that interview because Richard talked about a UFO crash at a copper mine that sounded eerily similar to the 1953 Ruth, Nevada UFO crash aka the Robinson Copper Mine UFO crash that I talk about all the time, along with another incident I’ll write another post about. I listened to the podcast and I have no words to describe how cringe-worthy this segment of the interview was. Before I mention what Richard got wrong and why he did absolutely no research prior to going Jimmy Church’s show, I’ll write a transcript of what Richard said. I also posted the video at the top of this post and it should be qued to start right before Richard starts talking about his version of the Nevada crashes (around 34:52).
Here is an exact quote of what Richard Doty said:
“Richie Mining Town, Nevada crash site in 1953, now this is a strange incident because the miners came upon this crash site with a flying saucer, they call it a flying saucer, they didn’t know what it was. They didn’t think anything about it being extraterrestrial, but there wasn’t anything in it because they couldn’t get inside the craft. It took almost seven weeks for the military to get out there to look at what they had and when the military got out there, they realized this isn’t from here, so they took it some place and I don’t know where. This is in 53’ so Area 51 didn’t really exist in 53. So they took it somewhere probably a base, some base somewhere. Some people say Edwards Air Force Base which wasn’t Edwards back then but anyways they took it some place. They finally got it open, and they found it to be empty so there’s no aliens in that and there’s others….”
My Issues With Richard’s Version Of the Event
1. There is no such place in the state of Nevada and never has been called the Richie or Ritchie Mine from what I’ve found so far.
I looked all over the Nevada mining records all day long for two days. I called and emailed the BLM to double check for me that there wasn’t a Ritchie or Richie Mine. There is an underground lode mine called the “Richard Mine” which is on the same property as the Robinson Copper Mine. I’m assuming he was referring to this mine. I don’t even think he knows what he’s talking about. He can’t even get the name right.

2. The date of the crash makes it impossible.
The Richard mine was founded in 1923 and closed in or about 1949. All of the lode mines in Copper Flats where the Richard Mine is located, were closed by 1949 because the industry in that area changed over to open pit mining. Richard said that the craft crashed or was found in 1953 sometime. There would be no miners actively working the Richard Mine to find a UFO crash like Richard said because the mine wasn’t even in operation. The mining crews that were in the area at that time were in the Liberty Pit, which was owned by Kennecott, and would have no reason to be anywhere near a closed up mine on the far edge of the property.
3. The crash location
I have spoken to numerous individuals who were at the site when the crash occurred, including the first four individuals to arrive at the site. All of the witnesses that I’ve spoken to point to an area close the Keystone Dumpsite as the location of the 1953 crash.
In Richard’s defense, the original rumors say that the UFO did crash near the towns of Kimberly and Reipetown. Both towns have been demolished and the mine’s processing plant currently sits where the towns once stood. The Richard mine is South / Southeast of that location. The mine is fairly close to the old townsites. Could it have crashed at the Richard Mine? Possibly. Do I think that it happened there? Most likely not because the witnesses all said it was near the Keystone Dump.

4. Richard says that the miners “came upon the crash site” meaning they found the object on the ground after it had crashed.
The miners didn’t stumble upon anything, they were all working the night shift and countless people saw the glowing object in the sky BEFORE it hit the ground. They saw the general area where the object crashed and sent Kennecott security deputies out to the crash site immediately I was told.
5. It took almost seven weeks for the military to arrive at the crash site
The military did not take 7 weeks to show up to the crash site. I can’t believe that Richard would even say this. There was a National Guard armory in Ely (11 miles away) and they were called out within an hour or two of the crash. The National Guardsmen called Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah and they were at the site within 5 hours of it crashing. Where he got this 7 weeks thing I have no idea. Ely is remote, but it’s not at the bottom of the sea or on the moon. Ely was reachable by road and they had an airport in 1953. I know that a convoy drove to the mine, but even if they didn’t decide to do that, they could have arrived in the area via plane at Yelland Field, which was used as a World War 2 training facility. Bombers were flown in and out of there during the war. The military didn’t choose this option, but it was an option if they really wanted to.

4. Richard was guessing where the craft went. He thinks it “probably” went to Edward’s Air Force Base.
My research partners and I know exactly where the craft went after it left the mine.
Once the convoy arrived at the mine from Hill Air Force Base, the craft was driven via truck out of the backside of the mine, driving by the Duckwater Indian Reservation (multiple witnesses saw the convoy), and they drove the craft to “a dirt runway in the Nevada desert.” Area 51 was a dirt runway in the early 1950’s. That’s where I was told the craft was brought by the guys that were in the convoy and drove the trucks (you can’t get anymore straight forward than that!) The craft was then flown to Hill Air Force Base where it went elsewhere. I know for sure that the craft went to Hill, but from there I’m not sure where it went.
Final Thoughts
I have to admit, I’m pretty embarrassed for Richard on this one. He clearly did no research at all when he decided to mention his version of the 1953 crash events. If he would have searched Ely UFOs or Nevada UFO crash on any search engine he would have came across my website or one of my interviews I’ve done over the last 15 years. Even if he didn’t find me, a google search would have proved that the Richard mine wasn’t in operation when he said the miners found that crash. But then again, if he actually did some kind of research he would have known that there was no such place as the “Richie Mine” or “Ritchie Mine” in Nevada. Sloppy research at its best. Nice try!
I think I pretty much blew Richard’s Richard Doty’s Mine story out of the water. Like I stated already, he should be embarrassed! I found his slapped together story and shoddy research insulting. I did the REAL research on this case. He didn’t bother to contact me at all or even do a simple Google search of what he was talking about before telling the public what he “knows.” This is going to make me question and fact check everything Richard Doty says from now on.
I’m going to post a second post about another event that he talked about in this interview shortly.
This is the most thorough research I have ever read. Incredible fact based detective work. Information from Ely in that time-frame related to anything UFO related is like looking for the a needle in a haystack. Thank you for keeping this history alive, accurate
and up to date. Thank you Jeremy.
